COMPANY BACKGROUND
One particular goal of the Hospital is to work in partnership with the Foundation in developing significant support for women’s health research. With a Board of 18, and a staff of 4, the Foundation raises approximately $2.0 million per annum in gross revenues. The Foundation has initiated and executes a number of fundraising programs, including two signature events, the Illuminations Luncheon and Birdies for Babies Golf Tournament. The Foundation has been successful in the area of corporate major gifts and is now also focusing more attention on individual giving. More recently, the Foundation has supported two very successful capital campaigns. The inaugural effort, Best Beginnings, involved a $2.5 million expansion to add nine new single room maternity care units in order to bring the total of suites up to 17. The Foundation contributed in excess of $1million to this campaign in the form of new equipment, birthing beds, First Hour of Life units and other amenities to fully provision this new facility. In addition, the Foundation’s support of the Making Room for Miracles campaign revamped the Hospital’s Ambulatory Care centre in order to improve and expand care for outpatient services. Other elements of the Foundation’s fundraising endeavors include the tile program for new babies, an internal giving campaign and ongoing awareness and fundraising efforts through long-standing relationships with individuals and companies who support the Hospital through third-party events.


POSITION DESCRIPTION
The CEO is responsible for providing leadership to staff and volunteers in all areas of fundraising activities to support the continued growth of the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Foundation. The Board is specifically seeking an individual who is capable of leading the Foundation to a new level of fund development and relationship building with donors and prospective donors. This leadership position will collaboratively create a strategic plan, will organize the resources necessary for implementation and will lead the execution of a number of fundraising programs. The CEO will attract and maintain the highest level of private individual, business, and community leadership in support of the Foundation, ensuring cultivation, development and continuity of their support.

Leadership

  • Oversee the development, implementation and management of all policies and procedures for the Foundation.
  • Provide senior point of contact for corporate, institutional, and individual donors in order to sustain and enhance long-term relationships.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Foundation at both fundraising and awareness-building events for the Hospital, but also those that may directly or indirectly impact organizational profile and performance.
  • Develop, manage and monitor the Foundation’s budget and ensure that expenses are in line with budgetary guidelines; closely monitor the budget and inform the Chair of Finance and the Executive of any areas of concern in a timely fashion.
  • Create and maintain a working environment which fosters collaboration and a team approach to completing tasks. Build, coach and mentor an effective fundraising staff. Evaluate and support development of all staff and volunteer teams.
  • Plan year round priorities for the fundraising program, ensuring a smooth flow of work and completion of objectives
  • Work with Finance and Administration in BC Women’s and the Provincial Health Services Authority to maintain proper pledge commitment and donation reporting, tax receipting, follow up and collection, account computer listing and all necessary financial data to conduct programs, events and partnership arrangements.
  • Work with all colleagues as a team dedicated to support the work of Women’s.
  • Work with the Board Chair to ensure that Board meetings are productive.
  • Maintain a strong and effective working relationship with the CEO of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, particularly with respect to shared hospital facilities and resources such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Participate in community advocacy and education programs which will advance the image of Women’s and provide fundraising opportunities
  • Uphold the values of Women’s in any and all circumstances and perform job duties to contribute to the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Promote Women’s on a year round basis with emphasis on results and enhancements to women’s health care.
  • Plan and supervise appropriate fundraising cases and all public relations programs, materials, news releases, special events and reports.

Fundraising Implementation

  • Guide and supervise colleague networks, and staff to meet the goals and objectives of the fund development strategy.
  • Develop relationships with donors and potential donors and initiate, with the support of Board members, all major gifts cultivation and calls.
  • Work with the Board Chair to ensure that an effective committee structure is in place and that all Board members are involved on one or more committees.
  • Maintain contact with key agencies and leaders as needed to ensure in progress adjustments and improvements.
  • Supervise the preparation of appropriate information pertinent to fundraising progress.
  • Ensure regular program awards and recognition for supporters, volunteers, affiliated organizations and others who contribute to the Foundation’s success.

Planning and Organization

  • Initiate development of both short-range and long-range planning with the Board, staff and external professionals (as required), to create a successful fund development approach.
  • Ensure that the Foundation has a solid infrastructure with a relationship-building climate that can function professionally.
  • Work with the Hospital President to identify specific development priorities for the Foundation.
  • Work with the Executive Director of the Women’s Health Research Institute to develop appropriate fund development initiatives.
  • Oversee the setting of specific targets for each fundraising initiative and monitor annual goals and objectives.
  • Review and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of programs and campaigns run by other organizations to create more successful results for the Foundation; ensure that Board and staff have access to this information.
  • Ensure support for fundraising by maintaining and initiating contacts with individuals, businesses, foundations including the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as a special partner, and other related organizations.
  • Ensure relationships with donors and prospective donors are appropriately tracked.
  • Ensure periodic review of long range planning and development of policies for subsequent fundraising efforts.
  • Work with the Board Chair to build an active, involved fundraising Board representative of the major constituent areas.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • The successful candidate will have ten years of cumulative experience in managing development and fundraising activities with proven sustainable fundraising performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in growing a non-profit, charitable organization.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fundraising techniques, policies, and procedures; willing to be hands-on, and at the foreground in fundraising efforts.
  • Major gift knowledge and experience imperative, and the ability to deliver in both major gifting and individual gifting
  • Demonstrated ability to build a volunteer system and a climate of relationship building.
  • Results orientation, with a track record of successfully taking ideas from start to finish, and an ability to identify and prioritize competing needs and handle multiple projects.
  • Strong business acumen including strong financial and planning skills.
  • Experience using a wide array of technology sources to identify potential donors.
  • Experience in developing partnerships and supportive associations with other organizations and individuals, respecting the value of each relationship.
  • Experience in grant writing and developing sources for funding.
  • Excellent marketing, business development, selling and analytical skills.
  • Able to successfully complete face to face solicitation with donors and interact effectively with partners, health authority staff and executive and others.
  • Awareness of the community at large, leadership structures, knowledge of corporate structures, business trends and government organizations.
  • Able to apply motivation, encouragement, promotion, diplomacy and direction in leadership.
  • Politically astute and able to navigate complex organizational structures with ease.

EDUCATION

  • A University undergraduate degree is required. Major course work in business administration, finance, and fundraising techniques is a plus.
