COMPANY BACKGROUND/CULTURE
One Economy Corporation is a global nonprofit organization that uses innovative approaches to deliver the power of technology and information to low-income people, giving them valuable tools for building better lives. The organization uses the potential of technology to help this population improve their lives and enter the economic mainstream.

Specifically, One Economy helps bring broadband into the homes of low-income people, employs youth to train community members to use technology effectively, and provides public-purpose media properties that offer a wealth of information on education, jobs, health care and other vital issues.

One Economy is made up of four primary business units:

Digital Connectors

The Digital Connectors program is One Economy’s flagship initiative that delivers 21st century technology training to young people from low-income backgrounds, who then share what they learn within their own communities.  To date, more than 3,000 Digital Connectors have delivered more than 56,000 hours of technology focused community service.

Public Purpose Media

Public-purpose media is online content that engages, informs and inspires action.  The Public Internet Channel, PIC.tv, is One Economy’s online network for public purpose media.  Launched in 2006 by honorary co-chairs now-President Barack Obama and Senator John McCain, the Public Internet Channel features fiction and non-fiction programming that addresses topics such as health, money and sustainable living.

One Global Economy

One Global Economy is the international arm of One Economy Corporation.  Currently in 12 countries spanning four continents, One Global Economy equips communities through local online content, distribution channels and place-based initiatives to leverage innovation and technology to improve the lives of low-income people and those in the developing world.

Broadband/Hardware

One Economy works with affordable housing owners, nonprofit organizations, municipalities and technology companies to help people and communities connect to the Internet.

The organization also provides consulting services for cities and communities, wireless network installations, and affordable wireless hardware. In fact, One Economy has worked with more than 50 communities around the world to build Digital Inclusion programs to ensure the benefits of technology are extended to the low-income population.

The organization leverages its national relationships to bring technology to under-served markets.  For example:

  • Through the National Equity Fund, One Economy offers a resource to pay for computers, training, and 5 years of Internet access for new affordable housing developments.
  •  In partnership with AT&T, One Economy will provide two free years of Internet access to 50,000 low-income Americans by 2010.
  •   Through the California Emerging Technology Fund One Economy will connect over 30,000 low-income California residents in the next three years.

The results of a comprehensive technology deployment touch every part of a community.  In Greene County, North Carolina, for example, residents saw an increase in SAT scores, business and job opportunities, and the number of high school seniors applying to college.

Through the work of One Economy, more than 300,000 Americans have broadband Internet access.
